Engineer Career
Once an individual has completed the education required to legitimately call themselves an engineer, there is a world of possibilities that open up. Most of the individuals on an engineer career path will choose a specialty, often something about which they have dreamed their entire life. Some of these career paths are incredibly financially rewarding and some of them more rewarding in the personal sense-though all of them typically pay much better than average wages. Finding the desired field may require some on the job experience.
If one is interested in a career where the constant availability of work is the defining factor, an engineer career working for the government is generally a good choice. These engineers work to maintain and construct roads, bridges, dams and other public works projects, in many cases. Such projects require constant repair, maintenance, and most are improved on a regular basis. One of the most gratifying parts of this job for many engineers is that their work adds to the infrastructure and prosperity of their nation, which tends to result in a deserved feeling of pride and accomplishment.
The private sector offers almost limitless possibilities for an engineer. Career options can include providing services to municipalities and private facilities, working for contractors in the defense industry or working for organizations that seek to improve the quality of living for humanity in general by engineering better drinking water systems for impoverished nations, environmentally-friendly technology and myriad other applications. The private sector generally pays more than the public sector though work may not be quite as steady. Still, many an engineer has made a reputation for themselves by providing innovative and effective solutions for problems that no one else had been able to tackle and has done so on a contract basis. This is a great option for those who enjoy self-employment, freedom and creativity in their work.
An engineer career is one of the most stable careers anyone can choose. Even if one becomes bored with their current employment, there is always the ability to branch out, as demand is constant in most applicable sectors. If one truly wishes to go above and beyond, there is nothing stopping them from seeking employment in the space program, the most advanced computer sciences or in creating an alternative to the internal combustion engine. Where engineering is concerned, the sky is the limit and even that limit can be overcome.
